Sonor designs and installs bespoke home cinema rooms across Chester, Cheshire and the Wirral — from a large OLED with Dolby Atmos in your lounge to a fully dedicated screening room with acoustic treatment, star ceiling and luxury tiered seating.
Our home cinema installations cover Cheshire, Chester, the Wirral and North Wales — from a large OLED with surround sound in your living room, to a fully dedicated screening room with acoustic treatment, tiered seating and Dolby Atmos. Every project is different. Every result is exceptional.
We handle everything: room design and construction, acoustic treatment, equipment specification and supply, joinery, seating, and final calibration. One company, one point of contact, from first conversation to opening night.
Spare room, basement, attic, garage — we'll transform it into a private screening room with acoustic treatment, star ceiling, tiered seating, mood lighting and the works.
Don't have a spare room? We install discreet, retractable systems that keep your living space beautiful by day and transform into an immersive cinema at night — at the press of a button.
All our cinema installations use the latest 4K Ultra High Definition with HDR. Whether a 4K laser projector or an OLED TV, you'll see the picture exactly as the director intended.
From a clean 5.1 surround system to a fully immersive 9.2.4 Dolby Atmos setup with ceiling speakers — calibrated and optimised to the room for jaw-dropping results.
Coffered LED ceilings, star cloth, programmable scene lighting — we design the atmosphere as carefully as the acoustics. Lighting is integral to the cinema experience.
We supply seating from leading global manufacturers — from clean modern sofas to fully reclining power-operated cinema chairs with cup holders and USB charging.
Most of the cinemas we build start with a room that already exists — a basement full of clutter, a garage nobody parks in, a spare room waiting for a purpose. Converting an existing space is our bread and butter, and it's where design matters most, because the room's quirks are already fixed.
Basement cinemas are the classic: naturally dark, away from the rest of the house, usually a good shape to start from. We design around the practical realities — riser height that still leaves headroom on the back row, ventilation for a sealed room full of people and electronics, and lighting built for a space with no daylight.
Garage and loft conversions bring different challenges — insulation, sound isolation from bedrooms below, structural support for seating and equipment. We coordinate with your builder where structural work is needed.
Upgrading an existing cinema is increasingly common — a room fitted out some years ago, still sound in its bones, ready for today's screens, sound and acoustic design. We keep what still earns its place, including existing media housing and joinery, and design the upgrade around it.
A "real" home cinema doesn't have to mean a projector. Some of the best rooms we build are designed around a large OLED — typically 77" to 97" — with a properly designed seating layout, acoustic treatment and immersive audio. For many rooms it's the better choice: perfect blacks and stunning HDR without the light-control demands of a screen, no lamp maintenance, and it works just as well for everyday TV and sport.
The honest trade-off is size. Beyond roughly 100", projection wins, and in a fully light-controlled room a 4K laser projector on an acoustically transparent screen is still the pinnacle. We'll tell you straight which suits your room, viewing distance and budget. The screen is one decision — the room around it is what makes it a cinema.
Two identical equipment lists can sound completely different in two rooms. The room is the biggest speaker component you own, which is why acoustic design comes before equipment selection in every dedicated room we build.
Depending on the room and budget, that includes: acoustic wall and ceiling treatment (absorption and diffusion in the right places, not just foam everywhere), fabric-wrapped wall systems that hide treatment, speakers and cabling behind a clean tailored finish, tiered seating risers engineered so the back row sees over the front and the structure doesn't boom like a drum, and sound isolation so a late film doesn't wake the house. We design seating layouts and sightlines against CEDIA's recommended practices — viewing angles, listening positions and speaker placement are calculated, not guessed.
None of it needs to look technical. The best cinema rooms read as beautifully finished rooms first — the engineering disappears into the fabric walls, the coffered ceiling and the joinery.
A great cinema room is as much about light as sound: coffered LED ceilings, star cloth, low-level step lighting, and scene control so "Movie" dims the room in one press. We design the lighting as part of the room, not as an afterthought.
Control matters just as much. One remote, not five. We're a Control4 authorised dealer, and a cinema we build starts the film, sets the lights and closes the blinds from a single button. We also integrate with and upgrade systems already in your home — including Rako and Lutron lighting and older control systems (see our system rescue service). If your house already has good infrastructure, we build on it.
A dedicated cinema room is equally at home for gaming or sport. 4K high frame-rate displays, powerful surround audio, comfortable seating — whether it's the Champions League final or the latest PlayStation title, the experience is unmatched.
Most clients come to us with ideas already forming — a screen size in mind, seating they like, a look they're after. Our job is to take that seriously, refine it technically, and carry it through to a finished room.
It depends entirely on the room — its size, what's already there, and how far you want to take it. Any company quoting a figure without seeing the space is guessing. Tell us the room and roughly what you're aiming for and we'll give you a straight answer, including where money genuinely improves the result and where it doesn't.
Yes — it's one of the most common projects we do. We assess what's worth keeping (housings, joinery, wiring, sometimes speakers), then redesign seating, acoustics, lighting and equipment around it. You pay for improvement, not demolition.
A 77–97" OLED with proper seating layout, acoustics and Atmos audio makes a genuinely superb cinema — and for many rooms it's the smarter choice. Projection wins for very large screens in fully light-controlled rooms. We design either properly and will tell you which your room favours.
It's the highest-value spend in the room. Treatment tames echo and boom so dialogue is clear and bass is tight — the same speakers sound dramatically better in a treated room. It can be completely invisible behind fabric-wrapped walls.
Design and specification comes first and is usually the shortest phase. A refit of an existing room is considerably quicker than a full dedicated build, where programme depends on construction, joinery and the other trades involved. We agree a realistic programme with you up front — before anything is ordered — and coordinate the dates with your builder or decorator so the AV work lands in the right sequence rather than holding anyone up.
Yes. One point of contact from design to opening night. Where builders, electricians or decorators are involved we coordinate the AV-critical details with them directly — cable routes, riser construction, lighting positions — so nothing gets value-engineered into a problem.
Usually, yes. We review, upgrade and recommission existing lighting systems (including scenes and themes) and integrate them with the cinema. If a system has lost its original installer, see our system rescue page.
Yes — a large share of our cinema work is upgrading rooms built five, ten or fifteen years ago: replacing a projector with a current laser model or a large OLED, moving to Dolby Atmos with new speakers and processing, improving acoustics and seating, adding lighting scenes and control, and bringing the room onto the same system as the rest of the house. We survey what is there and reuse whatever is still good.
Yes. We calibrate audio and video, tidy programming and take on cinema rooms installed by other companies across Cheshire, the Wirral and North Wales, whether they need finishing, a refresh or simply ongoing support.
Sonor designs and installs home cinema rooms across our home county and the wider North West. From our Chester base we cover the whole region — typically 15 to 60 minutes drive door-to-door.
If your village isn't named above, get in touch anyway — we work across the whole region and rarely say no to a good project.
Tell us about your room and what you're aiming for — we'll come back with straight answers, usually the same working day.
